RenormalizationGroup theory로 노벨상 수상. 일설에 의하면, 그는 논문을 안 내기로 유명했는데, 학교에서는 그가 뛰어남을 알고 있었기에 봐주다가 더 이상은 안 되겠다 싶어서 논문 좀 내라고 권유를 했다고 한다. 그러자 윌슨은 귀찮아 하며 서랍에서 논문 하나를 꺼내서 출판을 했는데, 그 논문이 바로 RenormalizationGroup 에 대한 논문이었다고 한다. (노벨상 수상. --;)
