오마이뉴스에 미국에서 정치학 교수로 재직중인 데니스 하트씨가 기고한 '오렌지'나 '어륀지'나 미국인에겐 똑같습니다 를 읽었습니다.

한국사를 공부하면서 제가 깊은 인상을 받은 부분은 일제 식민 통치기간 중 한국 사람들의 끊임없는 저항, 특히 모국어를 지키려는 투쟁이었습니다. 저의 은사님 한 분이 "식민 통치자로서 일제는 폭군이었지만 아주 민완한 폭군이었다"고 하신 적이 있습니다. 일제는 한국어를 없애면 장기적으로 한국인의 정체성도 말살된다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 지금도 한국학을 강의할 때 저는 한국인들이 외세에 맞서 나라를 지킨 투쟁을 강조합니다. 미국 학생들에게 이제 뭐라고 할까요? 일제의 한국어 말살 정책에 목숨 바쳐(이명박 당선인은 "받쳐"라고 하겠지만) 싸웠던 한국인의 후손들은 이제 자발적으로 모국어를 버리고 미 제국의 언어를 배우는 데 몰두하고 있다고 할까요?

이 부분을 읽다보니 얼마전에 보았던 책, '사라져가는 목소리들'이 생각났습니다. 이 책은 사멸 위기에 처한 다양한 언어들을 소개하고, 언어가 어떻게 사멸하는지를 설명하며, 왜 우리가 이런 언어의 사멸을 걱정해야 하는가를 논한 책입니다.

저자들은 언어 소멸의 유형을 세 가지로 분류했습니다. 첫째는, 그 말을 사용하던 사람들이 사라지는 것, 둘째는, 자신들의 말보다 다른 말을 쓰는 편이 이익이 된다고 여겨 언어가 교체되는 것, 세번째는 언어가 공적인 영역에서 밀려나 가정이나 친구들 사이에서만 쓰일 때, 혹은 그 정반대의 경우에 일어나는 자발적인 사멸입니다. 언어의 사멸에 대한 저자의 관찰 중 흥미로운 부분은 언어의 사멸이 언어의 강제보다는 자발적인 언어의 포기에 의해 일어난다는 것입니다.

역사적으로 볼 때 지배 집단들이 소수 집단을 강제로 와해시킨 경우는 많았다. 여기에 동원된 수단 중 하나가 지배 집단의 언어를 강요하는 것이었다. 재미있는 사실은, 이런 고약한 정책의 효과가 그다지 크지 않았다는 것이다. ... 상징적인 저항과 결사의 징표로서 그 언어의 가치를 더 높여 주기도 한다. ...

언어를 직접 겨냥한 정책이 아니라, 토착민의 경제적 역할에 대한 정책들이 소수 언어를 사멸시킨다는 사실은 매우 중요하다. ... 언어를 겨냥한 정치적 행위들은 실패로 끝나기가 쉽다. 반면 경제적, 사회적 영역의 주요 물자들은 손에 넣고 통제할 수가 있다.
